Welcome to the wonderful world of music. Okay, so it's not the ENTIRE world of music, but this blog is specifially based on "my" kind of music. Thoughout the quarter I will be exploring new bands and posting lyrics and how they relate to me. Also I will be referring some of my favorite bands. If you have a Myspace account, I have linked my profile to this blog because I often post my own blogs, mostly about music as well.

Empathy For Lyrics

Here’s a little something to think about; do you ever notice that no matter what kind of emotional state your life is in, the music you listen to always relates to your situation? Furthermore, when you do find that music that relates, you can't help but listen to it over and over again? My friend introduced me to a new artist, Colbie Caillet, and the lyrics in her music have been relating to my everyday life lately. While driving in my car, or just listening to it on the computer, I can't help but just replay her music. Maybe it's because I feel like someone else is going through the same problems or situations that I am, and I find a little comfort in that I guess.
Also do you ever notice that if you hear a song you haven't heard in awhile, you instantly think of a particular time or place in your life? I wonder why we relate a certain things back to past memories. I think it’s interesting to look back on how music and lyrics have an impact and relation in my life, and I also wanted to see if anyone else feels the same way as I do.

New Experiences Everyday!

So before coming to class today I wasn't sure what I was going to write about, but then I experienced something really eye opening walking to class. I'm sure many of you have done this, but I never have. While getting out of my car, my ipod was still on a good song, so I hooked up the headphones and walked to class. We all know what it's like to listen to music in our cars, or on the radio at home, but have you ever walked down the street with music playing in your ears? It really was a cool experience, I think because music isn't naturally suppose to be playing as a background for your life, like in movies. It made me actually involve the people who were around me. I couldn't hear anything but the music, so I had no clue what anyone was saying, and all I could see were their expressions. I was also listening to a slow kind of mellow song, so everyone felt really content. It was like a sence of peace for about 3 minutes. If you ever have a chance to yourself while walking, or sitting alone people watching, plug in those headphones and look at the world through music.

Gorge in George

If you've never been to the Gorge in George, I recommend you see a concert there sometime in your life. A couple years ago I went to the Dave Matthews Band concert playing at the Gorge. It was my second trip there, and it was just as amazing as the first time. I've never been to the Grand Canyon, but if I had to picture it, I think the Gorge looks pretty similar. The concert stadium sits on the the edge of a cliff, almost as if it could fall over at any moment. The gapping canyon looks like the earth had torn itself apart to show its majestic red rocks off to the clear blue skies above. A glistening blue river lies miles below within the canyon. This location looks as though mother nature intened this spot for a stage. The hillside is at a perfect angle for seating, not too steap, and just steap enough for everone to have a spectcular view. Halfway up on the hill are about seven to ten teared crevouses in the grass, in which you can lay blankets down or bring your own lawn chairs. Because these seats are the most popular, people literally run to reserve a spot. Higher up on the hill is a huge grassy area. In some cases this spot can be better then the teared grass because you sit higher up, and see over the stage allowing you to get a better canyon view. In the summer the sky can turns bluer then the river that rushes below. The hill is so high that it feel like the sun is hovering just above the grass. Sometimes the sun gets scorching hot, but because of the mellow atmosphere most people just lay on their blankets and bask in the heat. At night after the sun hides behind the red rocks, the tempeture drops to a prefect tempeture, warm enough to wear a tank top and shorts, and a warm enough breeze to just wear a light sweater. The stage is very open and made of open black rods so that it does not obstruct the amazing view. Because it sits on the edge of the cliff, at night it is the only thing you can see. There are no lights or buildings behind it to take your mind off the music. All together the experience is wonderful and it makes the concert probably one of the most memorable ones you will see.

Welcome!

My last post was a little early, I didn' t exactly explain what this blog was all about. My head line kind of sums it all up, but here's a little more in depth preview of what will be coming up.

So I've always been really into music and last summer I bought an ipod from a friend. She had many bands and artists I've never even heard of. Some of them were really good, and others, well they got deleted. One band I really enjoyed was Acceptance. It is an alternative/indie rock band I guess. I started to download more of that genre and it really widened my range of music that I like. Also, if anyone ever watches Laguna Beach or The O.C., they have a very different sort of soundtrack, so then I started looking up their websites and looking at their playlists. Just seeing other bands and hearing about them allows you to see a new outlet of music then what you're used to hearing on the raido.

This blog will be a reflection mostly on new bands I hear, up coming concerts, Lryics that have meaning, and also just my all time favorite songs/bands. I'm hoping that writing about different bands and music will show people that they can and should try to explore different genres. I also encourage you all to respond, or share your thoughts on what you like or don't like. What bands you recommend, lyrics that catch your attention for any reason, maybe up coming shows or concerts around here would all be much appreciated!

I have linked a few sites to this blog; my myspace account so that you could contact me if you'd like, and to view my own blogs I have posted (mainly about music). Also I've linked MTV.com, if you search either through their tv shows, or through their new bands, you'll find many artists that don't usually get the attention they deserve. If you have a myspace account, there is a lot of bands that try to advertize themselves. They have an enormous music selection and indvidual profiles for bands. You can search any genre that intrests you, and even more that you've probably never heard of (or at least I never have!).

This blog is not to try and persude anyone, but to inform. You are all intitled to your own opinions, this is just mine :)

Augustana

I have recently discovered a band called Augustana. It is a mixture of rock and alternative, although, it's surprisingly mellow. If this sounds familiar, you have probably heard their new song "Boston". I also really like "Cigarettes and Coffee", "Sunday's Best", and "More Than a Love Song". Those are just a few, but if you like any of them, you'll most likely enjoy all of their music. A lot of their songs have the same tone; relaxing, mixed with a little alternative. It's hard to say what exactly they sound like, or what other band they are similar to. My suggestion is that you just search for them on the internet (myspace or MTV.com) or through limewire and see what you think. I got a new ipod for Christmas and Augustana is definatly always on my playlist, I think it's good "driving music".
